Nepal Earthquake : The after effects

Nepal Earthquake : The after effects

April 30th 2015, things are coming back to normal now. Aftershocks are less frequent. NIne to ten aftershocks with Magnitude just over 4 to 4.7. Traffic in the city is running but very few. People are going away from the city. Around 300000 people have gone out from the valley by bus. They are either very afraid or they want to see how things are in their villages or they have casualties or fatalities in their village. Mostly people are scared and want to move out because of rumours that a bigger quake is about to come.

The true picture of the devastation is coming out and it seems the city in certain areas are very brutally damaged. They are still doing search and rescue operations. They rescued a man from a concrete rubble in the Gongabu area of Kathmandu. He was still living after 5 days.

Rain was hampering the lives of people living in open spaces without tents. It was unusually cold in Kathamndu for April. Outskirting villages of Kathamandu are also very severely damaged. Number of deaths have reached 5800 and wounded have risen to around 15000. Fatalities are expected to rise as the dead and wounded are slowly being accounted for.

Patients are still coming to NOH from districts. Today around a 100 outpatients were seen and 14 were admitted. Surgery was done for 13 patients. Some had multiple injuries in two or three limbs. Doctors are working from early morning till evening. People come even at night to get admitted. Operated patients and pre-op patients have been now slowly adjusted in the wards. We still have patients in the reception area, the physiotherapy section and also in the tents. Total of 45 patients have been operated so far. Around sixty patients need surgery. 19 patients are planned for surgery tomorrow. Small procedures like wound debridement, casting and splinting are being done during time of first presentation in the field hospital.

We are getting overwhelming support from our friends and well wishers from abroad and the country. Thank you for your words of support and your deeds of raising funds and arranging for supplies. We do desperately need supplies like surgical gowns and drapes and stuff.
