10th May Update

10th May Update

The surgeries are going on smoothly. There are lesser number of Earthquake victims coming and more of our regular OPD patients coming. We are trying to accommodate all patients in the hospital wards and are still not able to do so.
We have cleared the OPD area of patients and started normal OPD from today on wards. One of the UNICEF tents has been dismantled to allow the Project Cure container to come in to rest. This container was a culmination of a long process starting four months prior to the earthquake. This was between Dr. Brander from Operation Walk Chicago and Project Cure and NOH. Fortunately, we were able to get this forty foot container with vital supplies like anaesthesia machines, OR tables, ICU beds and other hospital supplies like gloves and dressing materials right on time and cue for treating the earthquake victims. This should relieve NOH from a lot of financial pressure, especially on supplies.
Quite a debacle and difficulty in getting this huge container inside the hospital compound. We paid 1% customs duty and a lot of paper work was required to release the container coming from the US via a freighter through Kolkota port. We are extremely thankful to Project Cure for this.
We are still waiting for the next shipment from Direct relief and Medshare which should contain a useful autoclave and other supplies for the patients.
We have received the nails and external fixators from SIGN this morning too. These have been sent to the OR as we need those nails for surgery tomorrow.
There was another donation of medical supplies through Rotary Club of Kasthamandap yesterday afternoon. This was part of the relief and humanitarian supplies sent from Belgium through our good friends Mr. Luc Salens et al.
We have now separated normal OPD from OPD for earthquake victims. Earthquake victims are seen in the green tent and normal OPD patients are seen in the regular OPD. All patients are seen for free including normal OPD for now. All earthquake victims will be seen for free even for follow-ups and we will try to give free medicines even later on in the follow-ups.
Yesterday,we got to know Jan Byrnes, Vice President of Grand Circle Foundation through Dr. Brander. It was a coincidence because she was also staying in the same hotel and she had also come for earthquake relief. So she came to talk with us and offered to help us now and in the long run, after hearing about what NOH does and what NOH is doing right now.
Today we received donations of two brand new EKG machines, rwo Mayo tables, one dressing trolley and four pulse oxymeters from Grand Circle Foundation.
Thank you all very much for your support.
