Walk for Disability Awareness Programme

With a theme of “Together for a better world for all: Including persons with disabilities in development” The Nepal Orthopaedic Hospital organized a ‘Walk for Disability Awareness” from Basantapur Durbar Square on December 3rd 2011 on the occasion of the 20th World International Day for the Disabled Person.  The walk program was done as a joint program by joining hands with Rotary District 3292 which officially made this a district event. Dr. Saju Pradhan, medical Director of Nepal Orthopedic Hospital took leadership and co-ordinated with Rotarian Mr. Mahendra Rajkarnikar who represented the district event committee of District 3292. A wonderful T-shirt with logos of disability awareness, logo of Rotary District 3292, logo of Nepal Orthopaedic Hospital and logo of Surya Nepal CSR as well as the NOH hospital picture was printed on the T-shirts. The participants were each asked to pay at least Rs. 1000 for each T-shirt and school students and rotaracts were asked to pay Rs. 750 for participation. Each participant was given the T-shirt and breakfast and mineral water during the walk. Mr. Rajesh Hamal who is a popular Nepali film star was the star attraction during this event. He also happens to be the ambassador for disability awareness in Nepal. The Rotary Disability Awareness Campaign also donated Rs. 120,000 for procurement of some T-shirts. Surya Nepal CSR also donated some amount to support the event. Altogether 626 T-shirts were given out and many people also joined the walk without wearing the T-shirts and a good head count revealed just under 700 participants. There were disabled persons, doctors, bankers, pharmaceutical companies, nurses, paramedics, Rotarians, school children, tourists and family members of hospital staff participated in the event.

Dr. Saju welcomed and thanked all participants for giving their valuable time and money for the cause and Rotary District 3292 DG Rotarian Basu Dev Golyan flagged off the walk and Chairman of Nepal Disabled Organization and Nepal Orthopaedic Hospital Mr. Gajendra Kumar Lama gave a vote of thanks to all participants after the walk. The procession for the walk was done amidst a lot of fanfare and the route taken was through Basantapur Durbar Square, Ason, Jamal, Ghanta Ghar Kamaladi, Tundikhel, Bhadrakali, Shahid Gate, New road and finally back to Basantpur Durbar Square.
